Single panel cartoons are exactly what they're called... a cartoon made up of just one panel. These single panel cartoons generally contain practically any style of art imaginable along with a gag or punchline. Successful single panel cartoons usually have the gag or punchline in the forefront and the art must simply compliment.

Here's an example of a single panel cartoon:

Single panel cartoons can be found practically everywhere! Newspapers, magazines, advertisements... even on the web! The reason is because they're simple, independent, can cover any genre or topic and easily gets the point of humor across quickly.

Now that you know what a single panel cartoon is... it's time to work on your very own single panel cartoon! :D What we'll do here is agree on a subject matter/topic to make a cartoon about, set a deadline and let your imagination and creativity run wild!!! Writers and artists may do this on their own or may team-up if you like. The object is to make it as funny as possible with art that supports the punchline/gag. Your cartoon can be done in black & white or color. Just post your finished comic here in the wiki by the subject matter/topic's deadline. We'll then enjoy reading everyones cartoons, openly discuss and constructively crit them all in the comment section below afterwords. :) The experience should be fun, entertaining and educational. Thus is the theory of a workshop! :)

Cartoon #4

2008-08-17 [Yncke]: And the only thing up yet is a single magnificent one panel comic to scare everyone away, who would have thought it. ;) :P

2008-08-17 [Hendercrazy]: Really? Do you think the example is overkill? I mean, funny you mention that... because that's why I made The Comic Workshop logo with a stick person... to encouage folks of all levels of writing and art to not feel intimidated. Then, I never thought about it for this page. O_O Maybe I should do a stick figure example to keep it consistent with the logo theme?

2008-08-17 [Nocturnaliss]: ... I think [Yncke] was being sarcastic, but I could be wrong... XD

2008-08-17 [Yncke]: [Nocturnaliss] is right, that's why I threw two smileys after my comment. ;)

2008-08-17 [Nocturnaliss]: The smileys did give it away << XD

2008-08-17 [Yncke]: It shows how tricky written conversation can be. :s It was absolutely no criticism on your choice of example, [Hendercrazy], it was meant as a praise for it. :)

2008-08-17 [Hendercrazy]: Ahhh... it's late... I'm tired... yet can't sleep. My mind isn't comprehending like it should be. XD

2008-08-17 [Hendercrazy]: I'm just excited to any and all that participate! There are so many funny and creative people here in Elftown! Looking forward to the lunacy. :D

2008-08-17 [Yncke]: *counts* Yes, it is getting rather late at your side. O.o Or is the term 'early' more appropriate? :P

I'm looking forward to it too!

2008-08-17 [Hendercrazy]: Well, it was "early" an hour or so ago. Now, it's getting to be late early. XD :P

2008-08-17 [deeterhi]: dragons....hmmm.....I'll see what I can come up with....

2008-08-17 [Hendercrazy]: Welcome to the 'shop [deeterhi]! :)

2008-08-17 [Hendercrazy]: I've pushed the deadline back to give folks plenty of time to make their cartoon. :)

2008-08-18 [deeterhi]: A mighty fine workshop it is. It reminds me of being back at art school :)

2008-08-19 [Hendercrazy]: I'm just curious to see what you and everybody else comes up with! :D There's plenty of wackiness in Elftown! :)

2008-08-24 [Hendercrazy]: I've thought out my cartoon finally... now I just need to sketch around a bit and thumbnail it out. :)

2008-08-25 [Yncke]: ROFL at [deeterhi]'s dragon's expression.

2008-08-25 [Hendercrazy]: XD XD XD That's brilliantly hilarious [deeterhi]! I whole heartedly agree with [Yncke] on the dragon's expression! Priceless! :P However, the dragon in the background obviously didn't care for where their game was headed whatsoever. O_O Not sure I'd ever go enter a championship chess match with a dragon. Lol! Great job on the complimentary style and coloring as well!

2008-08-26 [Nocturnaliss]: Hahaha that really is hilarious XD I pity the Dragon. Cuz... just, lookit him. Aww. So cool!

2008-08-26 [deeterhi]: :P it's always a gamble with your life when you enter a duel with a dragon :)

2008-08-28 [Paul Doyle]: Yes!!!!!!
